Engineering smart policy.

🛍️ Cost of living

This one is painful for a lot of us. Wealth inequality is growing. If we lose the middle class, social mobility becomes impossible and our children will never own a home (its already starting to happen). Some smart tax adjustment could help a lot here. Some common guiding principles listed here:

  •     Only pay for what you use (e.g. discount on rego if you do less than 5000km a year)
  •     The mega rich pay more (e.g. a Ferrari driver should pay more for a speeding/parking fine)
  •     Global billion-dollar corporations pay their tax bill (e.g. clamp down on profit shifting to tax havens). Australians should be fairly reimbursed for the revenue created in Australia by West Australians.
  •     Stamp duty reduction/elimination for 1st homebuyers/builders. And for retirees looking to downsize without losing wealth.
  •     Many tax incentives and some financial assistance for a variety of green technologies that have much cheaper running/maintenance costs. Taking the sting out the upfront cost and getting cost savings sooner.
  •     Restrict tax benefits for people/companies/trusts that own more than 5 residential properties.

🏠 Homelessness

This one is strongly correlated with cost of living and one of the 1st visible signs of wealth inequality growing.

I’ve seen a lot of unfortunate people across WA and Australia with nowhere to go. Give people a roof over their heads and proper mental health care and we can see them take care of themselves and become productive members of society. Increase the availability of emergency housing, increase the number of longer-term state housing. Where? We’ve got plenty of space out wide at the end of the new train lines.

🏘️🌏 Housing/Immigration

Focus on real in-demand skills in immigration.

Strictly limit immigration proportional to housing supply.

⚖️ Safety/Crime

Don’t just be tough on crime, be smart on crime! Find the root cause. Eliminate the cause of a lot of desperate behaviour. Solutions can be found in finance, social or mental health to prevent a lot of crime and antisocial behaviour.

Smart integration of council and business security staff can really expand the capabilities of our police force. More eyes on the street while the police can still focus on their core duties and attend incidents sooner.

There was a tragedy last year in the Churchlands electorate that really shook me. I wasn’t directly affected but I heard the shots. The following investigations showed a lot of changes need to be made to effectively protect our community. This is not something that can be forgotten or allowed to ever happen again. We must work continuously and intelligently to create laws, policies and procedures that truly keep us safe.

🌱 Keep West Australia Beautiful

I’ve been up and down the coast and across the Nullarbor many times. So much beauty to behold. Keeping things beautiful keeps the tourist economy flowing. Investing in regional nature and infrastructure combined with ingenious tourism strategies can create a positive feedback loop that maintains economic growth and nature’s beauty.

👨‍⚕️ Healthcare

Building bigger hospitals and driving more ambulances will never be enough. The range of healthcare options and their locations needs to spread out. As a candidate WAI will push for more facilities like 24/7 super GP clinics. Reducing traffic, ramping, wait lists and bringing more health care closer to your home.

🏛️ Integrity and Transparency

The Fusion Party has a great page on this https://www.fusionparty.org.au/ethical_governance

Wouldn’t you like to know who is talking to your government and how much money is being donated by them?

Let's engineer smart policy together in Western Australia!
