Housing as a Human Right
Australia's Housing Crisis is an emergency that is sucking money out of every other part of the economy as so many Australians struggle with high rents and mortgages and have to cut back on discretionary spending in the businesses in their communities.
Increasing the amount of public housing would reduce pressure on the private housing market which would make housing more affordable for everyone while freeing up more money in household budgets for spending in more productive parts of the economy.
Universal Preventative Healthcare
The Australian Medicare model, along with the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, has produced one of the best health-care systems in the world, but it needs more funding to maximise its benefits for all Australians.
Early detection and treatment of disease, and investment in more health research, achieves cost savings over the long-term, and allows for a healthier and more productive population.
We should add mental health and dental health to Medicare and increase budgets for bulk billing and telehealth and medical research.
An Evidence Based Approach to Drugs
An incarceration and criminal justice heavy approach to drugs has failed to reduce harms to individuals, communities and to the economy while coming at an enormous cost to taxpayers.
Fusion proposes a model of harm minimisation based on that implemented by Portugal, where decriminalisation has provided net benefits to society as a whole by focusing spending on supporting users away from drug dependence and towards living healthier lives.
Removing the cost of putting non-violent drug offenders through the court system and prison system will free up funding for more drug treatment programs and for world's best drug and alcohol education for our young people.
